Sunday, June 28th, 1998: Florida's Dmitri Young accomplished what few others have been able to do -- he hit for the cycle. In baseball, a player hits for the cycle when he hits a single, a double, a triple and a home run in the same game, though not necessarily in that order. Collecting the hits in that order is known as a "natural cycle."
For the day he finished 4-5 with 3 runs batted in and 2 runs scored and helped his Marlins knock off the Boston Red Sox 14-9 at Joe Robbie Stadium. In the postgame press conference he said, "I didn't even know I had hit for the cycle until after the game."
D. Young hit a solo-shot off D. Cone in the 1st, flied out in the 3rd, singled in the 5th, tripled in the 6th and hit a two-run double in the 7th.
In the 1998 season Young is batting .342 with 115 hits and 16 home runs. He has scored 49 times and batted in 63.

Monday, June 15th, 1998: It's draft day in the MLB. Clubs across the circuit will be trying to outmaneuver one another, hoping to conceal their most coveted picks until the last second. Once the action starts, though, all the mock drafts and predictions are out the window, and it's anybody's guess who will end up where. Grabbing the first picks are: Philadelphia, Anaheim, Florida, St. Louis and Seattle. |
